WebP

WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that offers superior lossless and lossy compression compared to popular formats like JPEG and PNG. It can achieve smaller file sizes while maintaining image quality, which can significantly improve website loading times and reduce bandwidth consumption.

When to use WebP format:

  • Images with large areas of solid color: WebP excels at compressing images with large, uniform areas of color, such as screenshots, product photos, and web graphics.
  • Images with text: WebP preserves text quality better than JPEG, making it suitable for images with text overlays or intricate lettering.
  • Animated images: WebP supports animation, offering an alternative to GIFs with smaller file sizes and better compression.

When not to use WebP format:

  • Images with high contrast or fine details: WebP's lossy compression may introduce visible artifacts in images with high contrast or fine details, such as photographs or artwork.
  • Legacy browsers: While WebP is widely supported by modern browsers, older browsers like Internet Explorer may not recognize WebP images.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless raster image file format that preserves the original image quality without any loss of data. It's widely used for various purposes.

When to use PNG:

  • Retaining image quality - Use PNG for high-resolution images or images with intricate details that require lossless compression.
  • Transparent backgrounds - Employ PNG for graphics with transparent backgrounds or semi-transparent elements that blend with various backgrounds.
  • Archiving and sharing - Use PNG for archiving and sharing images to ensure they retain their original quality and maintain compatibility across different platforms.

When to avoid PNG:

  • Saving raster graphics: - For basic raster graphics with limited color information, JPEG offers better compression and file size reduction.
  • Animated graphics: - PNG is not suitable for storing animated images, as it's designed for static images. GIF or WebM are better options for animated content.
  • Web applications - While PNG is supported by web browsers, JPEG is typically preferred for displaying images on the web due to its smaller file size and faster loading times.
